We dive into street wear and explore the T-shirt. A simple yet versatile basic for the everyday. Over a period of 5 weeks, we explore in phases of prototypes, finding inspiration from daily surroundings, with the lead up to a showcase of our group collection in conjunction with the period of Dutch Design Week.

Brainstorming

An ongoing discussion that unpacks streetwear, who- what - when- where - how. To deconstruct ideas around streetwear, the values, ethos, philosophy and practices - in relation to the historical context, environment, and people. We consider elements of sustainability during this period as well. Participants are asked to develop their mind map throughout the course, alongside group discussions.

Techniques

From the strands following the discussion, each session introduces a technique for expressing our ideas around streetwear. Each participant is guided through the process of selecting visuals, learning to ink them onto a piece of fabric or clothing. Participants are asked to display a level of competence and confidence with exercising and mixing techniques.

Composition

How might you want to play with the techniques you have learnt, onto a piece of clothing(s?) This portion goes hand in hand with prototyping, as several attempts are often necessary towards a satisfying result. Participants are asked to undergo the process of various iterations, combining various techniques for coherent visual(s).

Prototyping and Production

The skills necessary towards producing and exhibiting one's collection requires deliberation and various attempts. It is at times, frustrating -- but nonetheless satisfying. This period of prototyping may bring up answers and less solutions -- but guides one through learning to refine your own intuition and sense of aesthetics - form - and function. Participants should display a level of comfort with navigating the process of making -- handling unknowns well.

Display

The intangible skills learnt, thought process including the experience towards displaying your final pieces are imperative towards how you decide a visual presentation for your pieces -- that best expresses what you would like to present during this period, with regards to the subject topic. As it is a collective presentation, participants are asked to work together and present a coherent group work that reflects a synergy across diverse and different elements. Participants should be confident in managing group dynamics, and facilitate smooth communication in group settings -- towards a satisfactory result, whilst balancing aesthetic, material and philosophical outcomes.
